20世纪国内学界对于隋唐五代佛教宗派及其思想学说的研究走过了漫长曲折的历程，成果极为丰富。本文按照综论各宗、天台宗、法相宗、法严宗、掸宗及其他各宗的序列，客观介绍了以上各领域的主要研究成果，间或夹杂一些评论，最后从纵的方面对此领域一个世纪的研究历程作了阶段划分，并简要总结了各阶段的特点。
