Alienation and Social Awareness Among College Students*
Authors:John Holian
Abstract:The generality of feelings of alienation among college students was tested by employing two sets of alienation scales. The obtained intercorrelations indicated a close correspondence between feelings of alienation from the university and from the surrounding society. The social learning hypothesis was investigated by relating these forms of alienation to two information tests. Inverse relationships were found between degrees of alienation and awareness concerning both the immediate university situation and larger political events. The influence of social background characteristics on the major variables was generally negligible.
