古代越国的经济发展水平一直落后于中原各国。勾践时期采取了一系列的社会经济措施,一度缩小了越国同中原其他国家的发展差距,达到了灭吴称霸的目的。然而,当时促进越国社会经济发展的封建领主制经济已经背离了当时中国经济发展的时代趋势,同时越地落后的经济发展阶段、独特的经济地理环境和社会经济组织形式决定的越人“性脆而愚,水行山处,以船为车,以楫为马,往若飘然,去则难追,悦兵敢死”的经济人格也限制了越国进一步发展,置身于时代前列的能力,这是导致越国霸业衰落的根本原因。

An Economic Analysis of the Rise and Fall of Ancient Yue State

Ancient Yue State had been less developed than those states in central part of China before King Gou Jian took a series of social and economic measures and made his kingdom powerful and prosperous enough to defeat Wu State.However,the economic system under the rule of feudal lords,which once helped promote the socio-economic development of Yue State,went against the trend of economic development in China at that time.On the other hand,the economic backwardness of the region,its unique economic and geographical environment,and the economic personality of its people hindered the state's further development.The author recognizes it as the underlying cause of Yue State's sudden fall.
