清末民初湖北教育名列前茅原因论析

清末民初,湖北的各种教育尤其普通教育和实业(职业)教育发展十分迅速,以至于在全国各省中名列前茅,并初步形成了民主性、科学性、应用性和大众性的现代教育特色。这一时期湖北教育规模的迅速扩大以及教育制度、教学内容和教学方法等改革在全国成就突出,究其原因,除了湖北特殊的地理位置、交通条件和经济基础外,还表现于经济、社会振兴和国家安全保障,迫切需要大批各类人才及发展各种教育;同时,湖北地方政府尤其官居要津的张之洞及地方著名教育家在这一文化变迁中扮演了主导角色。
