On the Melancholy Mood of the Poets towards the End of the Tang Dynasty

The life and works of twelve important poets of the Xiantong era show the declining social condition towards the end of the Tang Dynasty. During that time the country was ravaged by successive wars and officials as well as the common people suffered greatly. The social status of men of letters fell sharply. Most of them lived a poor life and could find little way out of the predicament. As a result they were often in a rather low mood and felt frustrated, humiliated and despaired. There can be found a fin de siecle trace in their works.
