| Abstract: | Summer is a gothic novel and its theme is the fear of the other sex. In regard to the heroine's stepfather Mr. Royall, it is the fear of sexual threat. While to her lover Lucius Harney, it is the fear of loosing him or being deserted. What is more significant in this novel is that Edith Wharton opens a new field in Gothicism--the fear of the opposite sex. |
