Reopening the Wounds and Discarding Lethe:Memory and Remembrance in Grass's Peeling the Onion

Grass's Peeling the Onion has almost become a global cultural event.It is not simply a tell-all,but also a revelation of Grass's consistent standpoint:as a citizen who writes "against the stream of time",he adopts genuine enlightening spirit to reopen the wounds and reflect over the past.This paper attempts to discuss this autobiographical work,and through the exploration of the relations between memory and remembrance,poetry and truth,I and Me,individual memory and cultural memory,modernism and postmodernism,etc,it tries to probe into Grass's views about Erinnerungsarbeit(memory work)and his continuous efforts in discarding Lethe.
