From "the Love of God" to "the Love of Secular World": A Study of James Baldwin's Religious Thinking and its Implications

James Baldwin is an important writer in the history of African American literature. Religion played an important role both in his life and his works. His religious experience not only enables him to have an in-depth understanding of racial problems in US, but also helps him to evaluate the nature of African American community seriously. This paper endeavors to make an analysis of the religious elements in James Baldwin＇ s works, and tries to reveal the reasons why he chose to change his life philosophy from loving God to loving the secular world.
