The Touchstone to Test Human Nature--Read "The Great Carbuncle"

The Great Carbuncle" is an excellent one among Hawthorne's short stories, which tells us eight characters (six individuals from different districts and a newly married couple ) intrigued by the gem have come in quest of the stone.By contrasting two groups of people and describing the image of the light and the great carbuncle, Hawthorne showed his view of the human nature and his criticism to the humanism in the nineteenth century, and then expressed his hope to save the degenerated human nature through religious belief. This paper attempts to analyze the above view to improve the research of Hawthorne's works.
