Governance in Yangzhou:the Reflection and Insistence of Ouyang Xiu

After the failure of the New Deal and the demotion to Chuzhou,Yangzhou was a new starting point for Ouyang Xiu.His spiritual trauma had been basically healed.The imperial court reinstated him.As the state of the Grand Military and the important town in the southeast where the Dispatch Office of Huainan,Jiangnan,Liangzhe and Jinghu was located,Yangzhou brought Ouyang Xiu unprecedented experience in governance.Ouyang Xiu insisted on handling government affairs steadfastly and prudently to serve people,seeking advice repeatedly from respected and knowledgeable elders,forming the governing philosophy of"simplicity and efficiency".These ideas of governance originated from Confucianism and his father's instructions on him,and they were practiced and accumulated in the course of his previous official career.Combined with Ouyang Xiu's reflections on the"New Deal",the idea reached maturity when he worked in Yangzhou.
