As a relic of the Southern Tang Dynasty, Chengxintang paper took the fancy of scholar-of-ficials of the Song Dynasty. Mainly used for calligraphy and painting, the paper became a library necessi-ty, which was mailed as gifts between literati. By eulogizing it as an aesthetic object for appreciation, it was endowed with rich cultural connotations. The gift-sending and poems in response concerning Chengx-intang Paper provided a platform for scholar-officials to share feelings and maintain interpersonal relation-ship. Meanwhile, literati’s praise made the paper symbols of both the South Tang Dynasty and the North-ern Song Dynasty which have similar fate. Its acceptance and dissemination implied literati’s common in-terest in elegant things. The evaluation and use of Chengxintang paper and related literary writings can show their differences in personality, emotion and self-awareness.
