An Analysis of Subtitle Translating Strategies: A Case Study of Sex and the City

With increasing cultural communication between China and western countries, the popularity of foreign TV and film products is leading to a relatively new field that matters to the overall appreciation from Chinese audience. This thesis conducts an in-depth analysis on subtitle translation which is the leading type of audiovisual translation by taking examples from the American TV series Sex and the City. The author highlights the generalized subtitling constraints theories from Lomheim and the corresponding translation strategies applied in subtitling translation, which includes omission, condensation, expansion, domestication, combining different strategies to explain the examples of Sex and the City
