| Institution: | Michael Stein received a Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is currently an assistant professor in sociology at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Research interests include deviance, dramaturgy, qualitative methods and everyday life. Recent publications include "Gratitude and Attitude: A Note on Emotional Welfare" (Social Psychology Quarterly) and "Teaching Deviance to Deviants: The Prison Classroom Experience" (Free Inquiry in Creative Sociology). Teaching areas include introductory sociology and deviance. |

| Abstract: | The sociology of Erving Goffman is examined, including those who influenced his work as well as those influenced by it. Goffman's sociology is examined in terms of focus and scope, theory, and method. As much of his sociology is singular in its presentation, stylistic elements in Goffman's work are also considered. |
