A Comparative Study of French and Japanese Naturalist Literatures

Establishing itself completely on the French nationalism, Japanese nationalism incorporated Japanese national and cultural characteristics to become Japan's mainstream literature of the modern period. Both French and Japanese nationalism strongly advocated an objective and naturalistic representation of life and society in opposition to typical characters in literary creation. The author's ideas and emotions were carefully concealed. Attention was placed on depicting man's biological nature to play up physical, genetic and sexual desires. Large differences existed, however, between French nationalism and Japanese nationalism in all the aspects ranging from narrative contents and ideological interests to artistic and aesthetic values, from theoretical foundations to practical writing.
