严歌苓写了一系列描写记乙中故土女性的作品《第九个寡妇》、《一个女人的史诗》、《小姨多鹤》等。在这三部作品中，她塑造了三个身份不同，性格鲜明的女性形象即王葡萄、田苏菲、朱小环。从大时代背景下描写小人物的生存轨迹，她们性格率真与生命顽韧，在动荡年代不向命运屈服；在遥远的历史背景、扭曲的生存环境中展现美好人性。
