Social Mentality of Scholars in the Tang Dynasty and the Evolvement of Seclusion

Seclusion is a cultural phenomenon with a profound historical background, which has produced an enormous impact on Chinese society and culture, especially on the construction of scholars' cultural mentality. Living as a hermit became increasingly popular with scholars in the Tang Dynasty. Research on evolvement of seclusion is essential when we probe into the behavior, mentality, personality ideals, selection of value of scholars in the Tang Dynasty. Besides, the discussion on the cause of its evolvement is also important to better understand the social politics and academic thoughts in that dynasty. Therefore, the paper reviews the evolvement of seclusion in the Tang Dynasty, and reveals the features, cultural implication and the historical cause of the phenomenon in different periods of the Tang Dynasty.
