On the Soul of Realism

Truthfulness is the soul and life of realism and is an aim which many writers have made every effort to pursue. However, what is truthfulness is interpreted differently in different stages of contemporary literature due to the constraints of different objective environments and subjective understandings of the writers. As representatives, Liu Qing holds that truthfulness in literature should be guided by progressive Weltanschauung; while Cheng Zhongshi emphasizes that the writer should transcend the limitation of times and politics with peculiar personal experiences in order to describe the varieties and complexities of life and to pursue the historical truthfulness.
