Between scholarship and politics--The life of a leading exponent of new Confucianism Xu Fuguan

The life of Xu Fuguan, one of the leading exponents of the contemporary new Confucianism, is described and explored in this paper. Xu Fuguan was born into a poor peasant's family. When young he was an excellent and promising student. Later on he became the deputy Secretary\|General of the Joint Secretariat of the Nationalist Party, the Government and the Army. Being an upright person with a great mind, he was discontented with Jiang Kai\|shek's despotic rule and proceeded to criticize the maladies of the Nationalist Party, and eventually determined to resign from the Party. Afterwards, he proved himself as an original and brilliant thinker. In his early life, he was significantly influenced by Marxism, and later on he advocated a creative integration between Confucian humanism and democratic liberalism.
