| Abstract: | This paper explores the symbolic meanings of new farmland cultivation in the novels concerning the modern Chinese countryside,taking a few novels as examples,such as "The Soul of the River" and "Heaven and Earth".These novels are argued to show the fate of the Chinese countryside in the last two decades of the 20th century and the feelings of the intellectuals for the rural transformations. |
