A Multidimensional Study of Discourse Salient Meaning in English Job Interviews

By resorting to salience, one of the basic cognitive linguistic models aiming at the analysis of the issues on lexical and syntactical levels, the author focuses on the impact of discourse salience on the modification, improvement and reconstruction of real situational contexts in English job interviews. Based on Brazil＇s research on the discourse intonation system and Giora＇s theory of the Graded Salience Hypothesis, this paper firstly illustrates the roles of accented lexical words or syllables in the production of lexical salience as well as some lexical cohesive means for the manifestation of salience, and then some proper approaches concerning both the illustration of discourse salient meaning and the realization of textual coherence are multidimensionally discussed at figurative or idiomatic level. Finally some feasible and beneficial linguistic and pedagogical implications are summed up
