文学思潮作为观念系统是一个群体性精神结构，它贯穿于整个文学活动各个领域。创作思潮是文学思潮整体中的部分，而创作方法则是创作思潮这个部分中的部分。就理论性质而言，文学思潮概念主要是文学史范畴，创作方法属于美学范畴。在外延上，文学思潮可以包合创作方法，创作方法既可以隶属于文学思潮，又可独立于文学思潮之外而存在。
