Principles on the Standardization of Variant Forms of Chinese Characters: On the First Collated List of Variants of Chinese Characters (Draft)

After a statistical study of word frequencies in The First Collated List of Variants of Chinese Characters(Draft), the present author addresses such problems as the scope of entries, rules to distinguish between the standard and the variant forms of Chinese characters, flexibility in the standardizing process, and measures to be taken towards variants involved in constant linguistic changes. The author maintains that principles of conventionality, practicality, and instructiveness should be observed in the whole standardization process.
