An Allegory of Man-nature Relationship——Analysis of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner from the Perspective of Eco-ethics

Traced back to history,man-nature relationship has undergone three phases,the stage of primitive harmony,the stage of conflict,and a new stage of reintegration based on human reflections on the issue,which can be reviewed in Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner with the reputation of the greatest ecological allegory in literature.This poem can be divided into three parts,the beginning of the sail,sin and punishment,and salvation and reflection.His adventure is akin to the historical evolution of the whole man-nature relationship.This micro-history of man-nature relationship is a conclusion of the evolution of man-nature relationship,as well as a lesson that man has leaned from defying nature.In retrospect of the history reviewed in Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,this thesis attempts to unearth his ecological consciousness in this poem so as to perceive Coleridge's Eco-ethic outlook in reverence of life,respect for nature,and establishment of harmonious relationship between man and nature.
