文学研究中的形式化方法是几乎一切追求“科学性”的文学理论的理想，但是从新批评到结构主义，形式分析各派都没有达到接近形式化的高度。当前，由于发展第五代计算机的需要，在阅读分析中引人了现代逻辑和形式语言学，极大地推动了文学研究中的符号化、计算化和公理化方法的发展，这样就使得建立一个文论的形式系统可能性和意义都大大增加了。这是当代文本理论发展的重要契机，应予以高度重视。

The Penetrating Influence of Modern Logic Upon Literature

All literary theories, with a scientific purpose, may intend to get the fictional text formalized. That will be the ideal way to deal with the meaning of the text. But the formalization had not been reached from new-critics to structuralism. The coming generation of computers afford a great opportunity for literary theory. It is time to construct a new formal system on the basis of theories of literature.
