| Abstract: | Hedges are frequently applied in oral and written discourse to achieve precision and politeness. In fiction they could create an ironic and humorous effect; in scientific and academic writings, hedges are adopted to present a modest and prudent attitude of the writers and to avoid personal involvement. This article focuses on the analysis of the pragmatic functions of hedges in both the Chinese and English languages. |
