Arabic Chronicler Ibn al-Athir's Life and His Time

Ibn al-Athir is one of the three most important Arabic chroniclers.His central contribution was Al-Kamil fi al-Tarikh(The Complete History).This chronicle is one of the best Arabic historical sources for scholars to study the history of invasion of Crusades and Mongol Conquest to the West.The chronicle is not only the crystallization of Ibn al-Athir’s life,but also the records of that turbulent times.Ibn al-Athir was born into a wealthy family,so that he was free from the trouble of chaos in his youth and received excellent education.After his adulthood,he was not interested in being an official,but traveled and learned widely in Mosul,Baghdad,Jerusalem,Aleppo and Damascus and other famous historical and cultural cities.In these famous cities,he frequented many famous academic teachers,and saw many human tragedies,and listened to other people’s stories,collecting most materials for his new book.In 1231,he ended his decades-long study tour,carefully selected materials and wrote Al-Kamil fi al-Tarikh(The Complete History),completing the mission of a great historian.
