Mao Ze-dong analysed Chinese classical poems with a double identity-as a statesman and a poet, putting distinctive personality and charm into the analsis. When he appeared as a poet, dealing with the writers and works still in dispute and it was difficult to draw a conclusion in a short time,he could analyse them objectively solely from the poetic, artistic and aesthetic point of view against forced interpretation as well as vulgar sociological classifica- tion and hardly including the factors of metaphysics and left leaning. This reflects the practical and realistic style he advocated. When he appeared as a statesman. he could find something that hadn't been found by othes or difficult to find from the writers and works without dispute and already in the same understanding. This reflects the characteristics of making the past serve the present, drawing support from the ancient to satirize the present and having the aid of oth- er materials to explain his own ideas and this kind of review is no longer the poetic but political and sociological one.
