Divorce After Long Term Marriages |
| |
Abstract: | As divorce rates continue to increase among older adults, many divorcees face rebuilding their lives after dissolution of long term marriages. This study explored relationships with former spouses in a sample of 31 men and women divorced after marriages of 15 years or more. Generally, interaction with former spouses was minimal. However, greater interaction (parental and nonparental) with former spouses was related to mental health and well being. Additionally, greater nonparental interaction was related to less psychological distress. Findings suggest that easing tensions with the former spouse, where possible, may enhance adjustment, provide continuity and aid the grieving process. |
