| Abstract: | Marriage is an important theme in poetry. An analysis of ancient Chinese poetry reveals the following four basic patterns of marriage: (1) primitive marriage without a regular spouse in the matriarchal society; (2) marriage with a spouse outside one's clan in the patriarchal society; (3) arranged marriage in pre-modern times; and (4) marriage of one's own choosing in modern times. The paper outlines the mutation and characteristics of marriage patterns as reflected in ancient Chinese poetry. |
