| Abstract: | The theme of the placement of adverbs has been discussed in general terms in most of the grammars of contemporary English. Syntactically, adverbs can be appl ied as adverbials to describe or modify predicates, clauses and other adverbials . Semantically and pragmatically, the placement of the adverb in the sentence in fluences the emphasis of the word modified and the context of the sentence. Cons equently, the adverb has much freedom to shift from one place to another in a cl ause in accordance with a set of rules to govern its possible position. |
