The Functions of Code-switching in FLT Environments

In foreign language teaching environments,use of code-switching between the target and native languages at the right moment and amount may exert cognitive,communicative,interpersonal and affective functions through facilitating accurate transmission of instructive messages,comprehension and memorization of the input knowledge,smooth progression of classroom language interaction,reduction of the teacher-learners' psychological distance,relaxation of the learners' tension and maintenance of their interests in learning.Code-switching is a cognitive,communicative and pedagogical strategy,a bridge that spans the know and the unknown,the learners' competence gaps as well as the teacher-learners' emotional worlds.Appropriate use of the switch will promote the efficiency of second language teaching and acquisition.
