Essence of Chen Liang's Poetic Theories as Reflected in His An Anthology of Ci Poems by Longchuan

Contrary to previous literary theories which held that ＂metrical poetry takes priority over the Ci poetry,＂ Chen Liang（1143-1194） pays more attention to the writing of the latter.Advocating that ＂the most beautiful language is beyond that of metrical poetry,＂ he adheres to the principle that the Ci poetry should be characterized by ＂well-organized conception and idiomatic expressions,so as not to be unpleasantly dazzling.＂ Based on that,he proposes the specific ways for composing modern-style Ci poems,suggesting that Ci poems＂build on dialects and slangs and,incorporating pop lyrics and the best of philosophical and literary classics,be to tunes of music.＂ This offers operable approaches to the language and moral of the Ci poetry,and reflects the essence of Chen＇s theories thereon,which is consistent with his Neo-Confucian philosophy,i.e.,＂The truth and moral values do not come out of the surface of things,but rather exist among and within them.＂
