A Narrative of Bondage: a Neo-Psychoanalytic Approach to Call It Sleep

Henry Roth's masterpiece "Call It Sleep" is known for its portrait of David,the protagonist's character,and psychological being,which keep a strong parallelism to Karen Horney's theory of personality.David experiences great pressure both from his family and the society and thus developed typical neurosis.His problem started by disturbed interpersonal relationship,but in a final analysis,it has its origin in the cultural disorder.Through David's neurosis,Roth discusses the difficulties Jewish people undergo in the hegemonic cultures and thus shows great concern to Jewish people's destiny and situation.Call It Sleep is essentially a cultural parable about the assimilation and conservation with which every Jew is brought to face.It is a narrative of bondage.
