己卯顺天榜乡试案实为诽谤案

康熙三十八年顺天乡试案，前科状元李蟠为主考，前科探花姜宸英为副主考。放榜后，落第士子起哄，以匿名揭文罗织罪名，御史鹿佑徇私弹劾，致主考放逐，副主考监中自杀。后经康熙主持复试，原取士子无一落第。事实证明，己卯顺天乡试并不是舞弊案，而是诽谤案。

Shuntian County Examination Case in the 38th Year of Kangxi: A Case of Libel

In the Shuntian county examination case in the 38th year of Kangxi, the previous Zhuangyuan （number 1 scholar） was in charge of the examination, with the previous Tanhua （the scholar in the third place） as the assistant examiner. After the release of the results, the failed scholars started a riot, anonymously cooking up charges, and with the impeachment of imperial supervisor Lu You, the chief exam iner was banished and the assistant examiner committed suicide in his imprisonment. Later on when Em- peror Kangxi presided the reexamination, it turned out that the originally elected scholars all got reelected, making it plain that this case is not a fraudulent case but a case of libel.
