Abstract: | Analysis of data relating to the rate of student withdrawal at the University of New England indicates that there has been a marked increase during the period 1971–1974. This is particularly true for males enrolled in science based faculties. The responses of 70 students to an open ended questionnaire suggest that their decisions to withdraw from UNE in 1974 were influenced by dissatisfaction with some aspects of tertiary life. It is suggested that even though UNE is presently considering ways of improving these supposed inadequacies the problem of the attitudes and motivation of our youth, particularly the young male, towards education in general, will still remain. |
