Hair-cutting, Hair-wearing and Braid-cutting: Studies on a Body-Politics History of Hair and Braid in Qing Dynasty

In recent years, the scholars both at home and abroad have begun to concern the studies on the history of body. Hair, as a part of human body, enters into our view. In Qing dynasty, the promulgating and reinforcing the decrees of hair-cutting, hair-wearing and braid-cutting were all closely related to braid and hair. Braid and hair are the focus of a multi-contradiction and clash, and are also the evidence of history. It embodies a multi-strata change in the field of society. The author takes braid and hair as a definite historical code, systematically examines the relationship between braid and hair and Qing dynasty history, especially with definite politics, economy, culture, society and ideology, and further elucidates its symbolic meaning and its social influence.
