Does a Contrastive Study Need a Theoretical Framework

Based on some of Popper’s basic views and assumptions in the philosophy of science,this paper addresses the question of whether it is necessary to have a theoretical framework in doing a contrastive study,and argues that a theoretical framework is usually needed both to provide an overall theoretical perspective from which linguistic facts are examined and interpreted and to serve as a specific model of analysis in which linguistic data are classified and described.
