Reconstructing the Categorization of English Business Letters with Reference to the Categorizing Model of Speech Acts

Based on the categorizing model of speech acts, this article is intended to reconstructthe categorization of English business letters into four types: Collaborative Letter, Convivial Letter, Competitive Letter and Conflictive Letter. The paper illustrates the features of the four types from levels: word, sentence and discourse. The Collaborative Letters are direct and explicit; the Convivial Letters are positive and affirmative; the Competitive Letter are friendly and natural; the Conflictive Letter are indirect and tactful. All of them highlight the between the two sides in business communication.
