A Review of the Western Philosophy of Science on Scientific Demarcation and its Evolution in the Twentieth Century

In the Western philosophy in the twentieth century, scientific demarcation is a primary and basic concept on which various schools have held much discussion. The evolution process of these thoughts has gone through roughly three phases: (i) from logical positivism to critical rationalism; (ii) from Quine, Kuhn, to postmodernism through Feyerabend; and (iii) from Lakatos to Bunge, representative of scientific realism. Philosophers in the twentieth century have made further discussion on Western scientific demarcation and come to deepening cognition which will undoubtedly effect the process of philosophy of science in the twenty first century.
