The Fifth Rank Rural Households in Song Dynasty and their Role for Urban Economic Development

The fifth rank rural households were a major component part of the national households in the Song Dynasty. They, in feudal state with large agricultural population, were the major undertaker of so- cial production, the main creator of national wealth, and dominating force to promote economic develop- ment and material civilization. Because accounted a large proportion of national households with poor living conditions, they drifted to the city, particularly lost survival land, to provide human resources for city as the seeds of capitalism, to promote the development of service industry and commercial economy of the urban. It has a practical significance to diseuss the role of the fifth rank rural households of economic development for seeking ways to solve the problem of farmers in nowadays.
