An Analysis of the U.S. Economic Defense Policy toward Hong Kong, 1949- 1954

The U.S. economic containment policy toward the People's Republic of China was an important part of the U.S. East Asia containment strategy.In order to ensure the successful implementation of the U.S. economic containment policy toward the P.R.China,to Chinese south gateway, Hong Kong, the U.S. undertook strict trade control, and attempted to restrain the only corridor between the P.R.China and the West. In 1949-1954, influnced by the changes of the U.S. economic containment policy toward the P.R.China, the U.S. economic defense policy toward Hong Kong underwent a developmental process from weakening the transit function of Hong Kong to carrying out the licence control toward it.This mutation indicated that Hong Kong had become the bridgehead of the U.S. containing the P.R.China after the foundation of the latter.
