Loyalty, Filial Piety, and the Revolution Predicament:A Case Study of Investiture of the Gods

The War between King Wu and King Zhou at the end of the Shang Dynasty with the result of overthrow of the latter,serves as the background of the novel Investiture of the Gods(Feng shen yan yi).Based on the historical context,this paper explores the idea of filial piety and loyalty in the treacherous behavior of some characters.This paper extends the discussion,which centers on hovo the novel establishes the legitimacy of carrying out a war against King Zhou,to reveal the relationship between loyalty,filial piety,and the Confucian political ideal.The true meaning of the "revolution" is explored on the level of the linguistic system of Confucism.
