| Abstract: | There are extensive and voluntary citations of vernaculars in Xu Shen's Shuo Wen: An Interpretation of Words. The dialectological contribution of the book, either explicit or implicit, is remarkable in three ways: First, it supplies data of synchronic values for the study of Chinese dialects; second, it provides later scholars with valuable references to Chinese dialectological studies, and third, it offers methodological implications for later research of this kind |
