Strindberg and Expressionistic Drama

August Strindberg has been regarded by many as pioneer of expressionistic drama. The times in which he lived, his unique experiences (and the mental strain he went through) helped shape his boldness in fighting against social conventions and tradition. He, by combining naturalistic techniques with psychoanalysis, inaugurated the expressionistic movement in the sphere of drama. Eugene O'Neill, in his Nobel Prize Acceptance speech, spoke highly of Strindberg's contribution to the development of modern world literature and of his tremendous influence on O'Neill.
