A Regional Interpretation of the Causes for the Huizhou Academic Culture

Investigation of the Huizhou folk culture shows that the starting point and the focus of traditional Huizhou scholars in their academic studies are those fields of practical knowledge. Such a method of academic studies is closely related to the natural and social environment of the Huizhou area and the experiences of the scholarly Huizhou merchants. As the most prominent of the Huizhou scholars at his time, Dai Zhen(戴震) had similar experiences. He became famous first with his achievements in natural sciences. Then, falling timely in keeping with the cultural trends and the inherent requirements of academic development of that time, Dai was able to become an outstanding scholar of the Qing dynasty.
