An Empirical Study of Metonymy in Teaching College English Reading

Metonymy is not only a figure of speech but also an important cognitive pattern. What''s more, it is a thinking method by which human beings can know the world and enrich their language. Metonymic theory provides a new perspective to English reading teaching and has increasingly drawn more attention and concerns. It has been proven that metonymy exists in every level of language and a competence closely related with language teaching. So it is suggested that application of metonymy to lexical teaching, textual teaching and cultural teaching is vital to improving students'' reading performance.
