The Male Perspectives and the Father-Son Relationships in Chinese American Literary Works

In Chinese American literary works, the cultural identity of the Chinese Americans is constructed from two visual fields--the male perspective and the female perspective. As the representatives for Chinese American male writers, Frank Chin and Gus Lee are committed to reestablishing masculinity and father hero status in their works, smashing the stereotypical "feminine" image unfairly attached to Chinese American men by the mainstream of the American society. The depiction of the male characters and father-son relationships reflects the different cultural connotations between the west and the east and also reveals the confusion and contradiction the different generations of Chinese Americans encounter. In the global context, the concern and study of these issues are practically and academically significant for the orientation and development of father-son relationships and the inheritance of different cultures as well.
