A Study of American Great White Fleet's Visit to Australia in 1980

The American fleet's visit to Australia in 1908 was one of the important events in the diplomatic history between Australia and Britain, particularly between Australia and America. Because of the fear of the attack from Japan, the discontent with Britain's increasing ignorance of its interests, and the thirst for building its own navy, Australia adopted active tactics to America on the diplomacy and defense. The political significance of American fleet's visit not only indicated the close relationship between the two countries, but also testified the possibility of security promise provided by America in the event of Australia being attacked. Although their relationship had not been further strengthened as Australia wished, this event was undoubtedly the first and the meaningful step for Australia to seek for the American protection.
