The Thread of Development of Chinese Poetics: from the Pre-Qin Period to the Northern and Southern Dynasties

From the Pre-Qin Period to the Northern and Southern Dynasties, with poetry growing from its embryonic simple crude form to maturity, poetics, too, underwent a development from incoherent scraps of ideas buried in all kinds of writing to something of a system. This essay aims at tracing the thread of this development by discussing three major aspects, i.e., theories concerning the nature of poetry, its social function, and its critical criteria.
