Current Trends in Rhetorical Studies in the West

Four current rhetorical studies in the Aristotelian t radition of Western rhetoric are reviewed. Each takes as its object of study a p henomenon neglected by previous scholars: hedging, a feature of the grammar, the schemes, repetitive grammatical forms, emotional proofs, and , finally politene ss. In each case, I believe, the scholars in question are able to make a plausib le case that these neglected phenomena say something interesting about science i n particular or about arguing in general.
